Brean Beach with The Environmental Dimension Partnership

We went back to Brean Beach for the first time this year, and we were joined by The Environmental Dimension Partnership.

82 volunteers arrived bright and early to dedicate their whole day to making Brean Beach a cleaner place for all, just in time for summer. We began our day with our safety talk and getting kitted up, then we took to the beach in teams to collect as much as possible.

The weather was very poor for the first half of the day. Driving rain and icy cold winds made clean up difficult for volunteers but everyone kept their heads down to tackle the huge amounts of plastic on the beach. Very strong and high tides the week before had deposited large amounts of litter and debris along the sandbanks. Volunteers were meticulous in collecting even the smallest pieces of plastic.

We cleaned for an hour before stopping briefly for lunch and then heading back out again! In total the volunteers collected an impressive 59 bags of litter that weighed in at a huge 283.22 kilos of litter. The sheer number of unusual items was a source constant entertainment as volunteers dragged increasingly unlikely items back to our weigh-in point.

Last time we were on Brean Beach we collected some unusual items such as a croc, and a baby doll, and this time we found even more strange items. Some of these included:

  • A duvet
  • Toys
  • A fire extinguisher
  • A gas bottle
  • Flip-flops
  • Several kites
  • A dog lead
  • Fishing lures
  • Long metal bars
  • A geocache
  • Part of a stove top

We want to say a huge thank you to ZiaBia and The Environmental Dimension Partnership for their time and effort. This clean adds to the Life’s a Beach running total to the year, bringing us up to an impressive x kilos of litter collected in 2024 so far. We also want to give a huge thanks to the seafront team at Brean who always work with us closely to keep the beach clean, but who also took care of all the waste disposal for this event.

If you would like to sign up your team, or group, to one of our cleans then please contact us at hello@lifesabeach.org. We’d love to hear from you!
