Brampton Abbotts say no to plastic!

Last Friday, we had an action- packed day at Brampton Abbotts Primary School in Ross-on-Wye. The day saw us speak to 140 students about the dangers of plastic pollution. The visit aimed to educate and inspire the next generation about the importance of protecting our environment, with hands-on activities designed to make learning fun and memorable.

The day started with a whole school assembly discussing all things plastic.

After this, each class took part in our decomposition timeline activity. Pupils had to work in teams to decide how long they thought common household items would take to break down, placing them along the timeline. At the end of each session we talked through what the groups had gotten right and wrong, and most the students agreed that household waste items take far longer to break down than they had expected. It showed how important it is to recycle, and use less where possible.

But the day didn’t stop there! Each class took it in turns to litter pick, covering the school playground, field, car park and even some of the nearby roads! One of the students found an old chocolate bar wrapper which went out of date in 2018, making it older than the person who found it! Some other interesting finds included toy cars and a vape.

From understanding the impact of waste on wildlife to learning how small actions can create big change, the students embraced the day with enthusiasm and determination. Their energy and commitment to finding as much litter as possible was truly inspiring with an impressive 6.7 kilos picked up!

A big thank you to Brampton Abbotts School for inviting us to visit – and an even bigger thank you to the students, who were great listeners, thinkers and litter-pickers! You showed great teamwork and passion in all the activities and we hope we left everybody feeling inspired to help reduce plastic waste!
