We were back at Northam Burrows in North Devon for our fifth annual beach clean with the Torrington Girl Guides, and what a great evening it was.

Groups from across the area came together once again to help tackle litter on their local beach. We had volunteers of all ages joining us, including our youngest ever helper at just 11 months old! Everyone got kitted up and was ready to give their time to help keep the beach clean.
The tide was coming in fast, but that didn’t stop the 36 volunteers who joined us. We moved rocks, searched through the pebbles and hunted for litter hidden amongst the stones. The children were incredibly enthusiastic and it was fantastic to see. Many of them have joined us year after year, while for others it was their very first beach clean.

A special shout out goes to all the parents who gave up their evening to help the young volunteers clean safely. They also got stuck in themselves and collected plenty of litter along the way.

By the end of the session, we’d collected 27.5kg of litter from the beach. When you look at what this group has achieved over the last five years, it’s pretty incredible. A total of 256 volunteers have taken part, filling 76 bags of litter and removing 110.65kg of rubbish from Northam Burrows.
That’s a huge amount of effort from so many people who care about their local coastline, and we’re grateful to every single person who has joined us over the years. Here’s to making it six years next time!
