Yesterday, Cam Hopton’s became the newest primary school to join our Waste Less Schools Initiative!

The children have been taking part in their own recycling projects, and we were impressed to see all the children bringing their waste in from home, to be recycled correctly! Some of the students had been taking part in upcycling projects, which included turning old water bottles into wind chimes!

We began the day with a whole-school assembly, where pupils learned about plastic waste – what it is, how and why it ends up on our beaches and in the ocean, and the harm it causes to the environment. The students shared fantastic ideas on how we can use less plastic and live more sustainable lives!

After the assembly, each class took part in our decomposition timeline workshop. Each class worked in groups of around 5/6 students, to guess how long everyday items take to break down in the natural environment. This activity includes things like newspaper, washing up gloves and plastic bottles.

We also took each class outside to do a litter pick around the school. A total 215 students found 5.76 kilograms of litter! Most of this was stray pieces of wrappers and broken toys hidden in bushes around the grounds, however some students were particularly eager and were able to retrieve runaway pieces of rubbish from underneath the buildings!

A massive thank you to the staff of Cam Hopton’s Primary School for being so welcoming, and an even bigger thank you to the incredible pupils for their hard work and thoughtful ideas on how we can all contribute to a more sustainable future!
