Our First Beach Clean of 2024

We have kicked off our beach cleans for the year by heading down to Falmouth! We teamed up with the Eco Society and Marine Watch Society from Falmouth University to clean Castle Beach. We started 2023 with a clean on Castle Beach and Falmouth University, so it felt only right that we do the same again to kick off the 2024 beach clean season.

We had 22 wonderful volunteers arrive. Despite heavy rain the night before, the sun was shining. The students had to pick through masses of seaweed to find the litter tangled inside. Ghost gear, along with pieces of broken plastic and parts of eroded tin cans were all found amongst the seaweed.

Falmouth is host to a wonderful array of marine life, and Castle Beach with its deep rock pools, was no exception. We saw countless sea anemones, tiny fish, and shellfish. These rock pools were also areas where washed-up litter collected, meaning we had to hop between pools to find the rubbish.

After two hours of litter picking we had collected 10.88 kilos of waste off Castle Beach, a great result! A huge thank you to both the Marine Watch society and the Eco Society from Falmouth university for organising yet another successful beach clean with us and kicking off 2024!
