Tredington tackle plastic pollution!

Life’s a Beach had the pleasure of visiting Tredington Primary School for an inspiring and action-packed morning focused on protecting our environment.

We began with an interactive assembly all about plastic pollution. Pupils learned more about the journey of plastic waste – from our homes and streets to rivers and eventually the ocean. We explored why plastic can be harmful to wildlife, how long it can remain in the environment, and the simple everyday choices we can make to reduce our impact. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed great curiosity about how they can help care for the planet.

After the assembly, we worked more closely with each class through our decomposition timeline activity. In small groups, pupils examined a range of common household items such as plastic bottles, wrappers, gloves and wipes. They discussed how long they believed each item would take to break down in nature and placed them along a timeline. The teamwork and problem-solving skills on display were fantastic, and there were plenty of surprised reactions when the real answers were revealed!

To round off the session, it was time to take action. Armed with hi-vis vests, litter pickers and buckets, the pupils headed outdoors to carry out a litter pick around the school grounds and surrounding areas. Each group took responsibility for different sections, ensuring a thorough clean-up.

The children approached the task with enthusiasm and determination, carefully searching for hidden litter in corners and along pathways. From food packaging to stray plastic items, a variety of waste was collected – making a visible difference to the school environment in a short amount of time.

Some of the children also had the opportunity to design and create eye-catching anti-littering posters. They carefully thought about strong messages and bold artwork that would encourage others to take pride in their environment and dispose of waste responsibly. The finished posters were colourful, creative and full of powerful reminders about why it’s important to keep our school and community clean.

We were incredibly impressed by the positive attitudes, brilliant listening skills and strong sense of responsibility shown by the pupils at Tredington Primary School. It was wonderful to see such commitment to keeping their school and community clean.
