Life’s a Beach recently visited St Mary’s School in Churchdown to spend time with 35 enthusiastic Year 2 pupils, helping them learn more about plastic pollution and how they can make a difference to the environment.

During our visit, the children listened carefully to our plastic pollution assembly, where they discovered more about the impact litter and plastic can have on our environment and the importance of looking after the world around us. The pupils got involved, shared their thoughts and explored how small changes to our everyday habits can help reduce plastic pollution.

Next, it was time for our plastic decomposition timeline activity! The children explored how long different everyday items can take to break down in the environment, placing them along our timeline to see just how long litter can stick around. The activity helped bring the issue to life and showed why it is so important to dispose of our waste responsibly.

After learning about the impact of litter, the children put their knowledge into action by heading outside for a school litter pick. The Year 2 pupils worked together to search for rubbish and help make their school grounds a cleaner, more welcoming place. Together, the children collected an impressive 4.75 kilograms of litter! What a fantastic effort from such a brilliant group of young environmentalists.

A huge well done to all 35 pupils at St Mary’s School for getting involved, asking questions and taking positive action to protect our planet. It was wonderful to see them learning about plastic pollution and putting their knowledge into practice.

At Life’s a Beach, we believe that educating young people is an important step towards a cleaner, greener future. By helping children understand the impact of their actions from an early age, we hope to inspire the next generation to take care of our environment and keep our planet free from plastic pollution.
