We returned to Berrow Beach for another clean-up with the amazing people at NFU Mutual. 18 volunteers joined us on a very windy and chilly morning for a full day of beach cleaning together.
Working as one large team, we walked in a line down the beach, covering the sand dunes all the way down to the tide line and making sure nothing was missed. The amount of microplastics we collected was staggering. Whilst these tiny pieces weigh almost nothing, they can be incredibly harmful to the environment, making it even more important that we remove them from our beaches.
It wasn’t only small pieces of plastic we found, however! We came across a large rubber seat, a series of metal pipes and poles covered in nails, large jelly-filled toys and an endless amount of wet wipes.
After two hours of cleaning, we stopped for a lunch break to warm up before heading back out to tackle the other side of the beach. Volunteers even started competing to fill their bags first, with some becoming so heavy that they needed tying off halfway through the clean!
We were blown away by the end result. By the time we finished, the team from NFU Mutual had collected an incredible 114kg of litter from Berrow Beach.
A huge thank you to everyone who braved the cold and wind and got stuck in. It was a brilliant day of hard work, and 114kg of litter that is no longer sitting on the beach or making its way into the sea. We can’t wait to see what we can tackle together next!
