Volunteers Brave Storm to Clean Falmouth Beach

Our latest beach clean at Gyllyngvase was certainly one to remember! Battling torrential rain and strong winds, our incredible group of university volunteers joined us once again for a determined effort to protect our coastline. The weather may have been wild, but spirits were high and the team’s enthusiasm and laughter never wavered.

Armed with gloves and bags, and plenty of waterproof layers, everyone got stuck in despite the challenging conditions. In total, we collected an impressive 7.42kg of litter. We removed everything from small fragments of plastic to larger debris like plastic oil cans, that would otherwise have posed a threat to wildlife and the wider marine environment. Every single piece picked up is one less item that could break down into harmful microplastics in our sea.

One of the most special discoveries of the day was finding several mermaid purses, also known as shark and ray egg cases, scattered along the strandline. These amazing finds are a powerful reminder that Gyllyngvase is more than just a beautiful beach; it’s a vital habitat and nursery ground for marine life. Protecting it from plastic pollution is crucial to giving these species the best chance to thrive.

We are so grateful to the university volunteers from Falmouth University’s Marine Watch and GEMs society, who showed up ready to work hard, even in truly horrible weather. Your commitment to keeping our beaches clean and our ocean plastic free inspires us every time. Rain or shine, teamwork like this proves that positive action for the planet doesn’t stop when the forecast looks gloomy.
