Last week, Life’s a Beach had the pleasure of spending the morning with Key Stage 1 at St Whites Primary School in Cinderford.

The day started with a plastic pollution assembly. The purpose of this assembly is to introduce the students to our work here at Life’s Beach, and help them understand a little more about plastic, why it’s bad, how it gets onto our beaches, and what we can do to help!

We then spent time with each class, where they took part in our decomposition timeline. Each class worked in small groups to decide how long they think everyday household items such as plastic bottles, gloves and wet wipes take to decompose. We were really impressed by the children’s great teamwork and discussions before deciding where to place each item!

After talking through the answers of the timeline, the children armed up with hi vis vests, litter pickers and buckets, ready to clean up their school! We were extremely impressed as one student even brought in their own litterpicker from home! One of the classes targeted the playground, whilst another focused on the path into school past the nursery and another cleaned up the front of the school and car park.

The students were extremely dedicated to finding as much litter as possible, with some particularly determined pupils getting stuck into the bushes to retrieve items! Toy cars, plastic sharks, crisp packets and even a nappy were among the items found, with a combined total of 3.36kg of litter picked up!

Well done to the KS1 students at St Whites for their great listening and hard work. We really enjoyed our morning and hope the students feel inspired after our visit!
