Longford Litterpickers!

Life’s a Beach had another fantastic morning working with pupils at Longford Primary School – the latest school to join our Waste Less Education Programme!

We kicked off the session with an engaging whole-school assembly focused on plastic pollution. During the assembly, we introduced the children to the work we do at Life’s a Beach and explored some important questions: What is plastic? Why can it be harmful to wildlife and our environment? How does litter travel from our streets to rivers and eventually the sea? Most importantly, we discussed the positive actions we can all take to reduce waste and protect our planet.

After the assembly, each class took part in a hands-on learning activity with our popular decomposition timeline. Working in small groups, pupils were given a selection of everyday items such as plastic bottles, aluminium cans and wet wipes. They discussed how long they believed each item would take to break down in the environment and then placed them along a timeline. The children took part in some great conversations!

Once we had revealed the real decomposition times (some of which were very surprising), it was time to put learning into action. Equipped with high-visibility vests, litter pickers and collection buckets, the pupils headed outside to carry out a litter pick around the school grounds.

The children were extremely enthusiastic, with pupils working carefully and thoroughly to ensure no litter was left behind. A wide range of items was collected, from snack wrappers and drink bottles to unexpected bits of discarded waste. Their determination and sense of responsibility for their school environment were fantastic to witness, and they collected an impressive 12.78 kilograms of litter in total!

We were incredibly proud of the 263 pupils at Longford Primary School for their positive attitudes, excellent listening and commitment to making a difference. It was a pleasure to spend the morning with such engaged and environmentally aware young people.
