Recently, Life’s a Beach had the pleasure of returning to Highnam Primary School!

The day began with a plastic pollution assembly designed to introduce students to the work we do at Life’s a Beach. Together, we explored what plastic is, why it can be harmful to our environment, how it often ends up on our beaches and in our oceans, and most importantly, what we can all do to make a difference!

Following the assembly, each class worked on our interactive decomposition timeline activity. In small groups, pupils discussed and decided how long they thought everyday household items, such as plastic bottles, disposable gloves and wet wipes, take to break down in the environment. We were incredibly impressed with the thoughtful discussions, teamwork and problem-solving skills shown by the children before placing each item on the timeline.

Once the answers were revealed and discussed, it was time for action! Equipped with hi-vis vests, litter pickers and buckets, the pupils headed out to carry out a litter pick around the school grounds. Their enthusiasm was fantastic! The determination to collect as much litter as possible was clear, with some particularly committed pupils carefully retrieving items from bushes and hard-to-reach spots.

Among the items collected were crisp packets, plastic packaging, broken toys and other everyday waste, all adding up to an impressive 10.56 kilograms of litter collected by the end of the session! The pupils showed real care for their school environment and a strong sense of responsibility for keeping it clean and safe.

A huge well done to the students at Highnam Primary School for their excellent listening, teamwork and dedication. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and hope the pupils feel inspired to continue making positive changes for the environment.
