Berry Hill Goes Green!

On Friday, Life’s a Beach had a wonderful visit to Berry Hill School, where the children took part in a day of litter and pollution focused activities!

The morning began with a whole-school assembly all about the journey of litter and how it reaches the sea, showing the children why itโ€™s so important to reduce, reuse and recycle. The student were full of great questions, ideas and eager to share their knowledge!

Classes then explored a fun decomposition activity, looking at how long different items take to break down. There were lots of surprised faces when they discovered the huge amount of time different items take to biodegrade! The pupils offered some fantastic ideas for sustainable alternatives, or ways to reuse items before they go in the bin.

Finally, the children headed outside for a class litterpick. Armed with hi vis vests and litter pickers, they worked together to clean the school grounds. There were lots of stray wrappers found, particularly around the edges of the playground and field, and the students talked about how important it is to make sure their snack wrappers are put into the bin! The children collected a whopping 15.21 kilograms of rubbish!

There were two extremely interesting finds, a packet of crisps from 2008, retrieved from a bush on the school field, and a packet of crisps from 1996, which was found underneath one of the buildings! The children couldn’t believe how old these crisp packets were, and how good of a condition they were in despite being out in the environment for so many years. This just goes to show how important it is to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible!

A big thank you to Berry Hill for inviting Life’s a Beach into the school! The pupils were extremely enthusiastic about protecting the environment, and it was great to see the school has their very own eco council! Thank you to all the staff and students for being so welcoming and we hope you are feeling inspired after our visit!
